Descent 4

Developer: Volition
Publisher: Interplay
Released: N/A
Demos: N/A.
Info: Planned sequel to Descent 3 (announced around the same time), by Volition (FreeSpace development half of Parallax); rumored to have been a prequel to Descent: First Strike; during development, concept drifted away from Descent theme ("The plan in D4 is that how you move about the mines will change periodically"); Volition and Interplay severed ties and Volition was subsequently acquired by THQ; Descent (and Freespace) rights still held by Interplay; even if resultant game still used Descent themes, would not be licensed; developed into Red Faction.

Volition's Descent 4 website launched (14 December 1998).
17 April 2000 - Volition's Descent 4 website is renamed 'FPS' and the first of several teaser images is posted.

At the same time, some of the Volition developers began posting on the DescentBB. Few specifics were forthcoming, leading to much speculation about the Descent 4 / FPS game. At E3 on 11 May 2000, the FPS was announced as Red Faction.
