1940 - Regia Aeronautica Regia Aeronautica markings consisted of a stylized black and white fasces on the upper and lower wing surfaces, with a full-color version on the fuselage, usually underneath the cockpit. A white cross with the coat of arms of the House of Savoy was applied to the rudder. Aircraft which co-operated with the Luftwaffe had a white band painted around the fuselage, one meter ahead of the tailplane. On single-engined aircraft the band was one-half a meter wide, and one meter wide on multi-engined aircraft. |

1944 - Co-Belligerent Air Force After the Armistice, the Co-Belligerent Air Force adopted a red, white and green roundel, which was applied to the wings and fuselage. |

1945 - Aviazione della Repubblica Sociale Italiana After the Armistice, the Aviazione della Repubblica Sociale Italiana used new markings also. In 1944, revised fasces were applied to the wings, with the Italian flag on the fuselage and tail. In 1945, these were replaced with German Iron Crosses on wings and fuselage, with a small Italian flag on the fuselage as shown. |
After World War II, the air force was re-organized as the Aeronautica Militare Italiano (AMI, or Italian Air Force). Naval aircraft are flown by the Marinavia, with army aircraft being utilized by the Aviazione Leggera dell'Escercito. Markings are essentially the same as the WWII CBAF. Marinavia aircraft have an additional anchor marking, and army aircraft bear the 'ESERCITO' inscription.
