Date: Sun, 04 Dec 2005 12:29:15 +0100 Subject: Again about US Army requirements From: "Domenico sgarlato" Hi Robert, again on the matter of US Army Acquisition Programs, I can add some information. About CP 39-640, final scores were: Martin Model 179 813.6 points (over 1.000, I suppose...) North American NA-62 673.6 Douglas XB-23 610.3 About CP 39-770, other tenders were (with some doubts marked with a ?): Curtis-Wright XP-46 North American NA-50B/NA-73 (first incarnation of the Mustang) Seversky AP-4J XP-44-1 Rocket (R-2180 eng., classified 2nd after the Bell Model 4F P-45/P-39C) Seversky AP-4L XP-44-2 Rocket (R-2800 eng.) Seversky AP-10 (version of the AP-3 that became XP-47, XP-47A and XP-47B; i'm not sure the AP-10 des remained valid also for XP-47B) Douglas D.312 XP-48 (?) About CP 39-775 I found the date of 11 March 1939: perhaps the date of RFP? The XP-49 (with bore several internal designations: L-106, Model 23, Model 222 and Model 522-66-07) was declared winner on 2 August 1939; Grumman Design 41 was named the second on 25 November 1939. I have also indications about the Douglas D-312 as it was an high altitude fighter, altough single-engined, but I prefer consider it as an outsider for 39-770. Moreover, I received from a friend a picture of an odd-looking Curtis-Wright aircraft, labelled as a twin-engined P-40C; the guy sent me the pic was unable to trace any further information about it. As the P-40 was built since 1941 it should be a bit late contestant for the 39-775 but... it's a possibility. I researched about the idea of a twin-engined P-40 for about 20 years, without any result. Do you know something about it? For today I think you have sufficient matters to deal with and I stop here See you Nico
