Military Pulsejet & Ramjet Designations
|
|
The following table provides a brief reference list of U.S. pulsejet and ramjet engines in order by their
military designation. The following information is provided:
- Manufacturer: The designer and builder of the engine; some engines were developed and built by multiple
companies.
- Model: The manufacturer's internal model designation of the engine.
- Designation: The military designation of the engine, which consists of a Type designation (PJ = Pulsejet or
RJ = Ramjet) and sequence number. For unknown reasons, the numerical sequence was started at 30, with even numbers
being assigned to US Navy projects and odd numbers being assigned to US Army and Air Force projects. These were
followed by a manufacturer's code and subtype; for example J79-GE-19 indicates 79th
turbojet procured, designed and/or manufactured by General Electric, 19th subvariant of this design. The subtype
numbers were again assigned to military branch, with even numbers being used for US Navy projects and odd numbers
being used for US Army and Air Force projects. Sometimes further changes were signified by an additional letter
(J79-GE-19A), with 'W' being used for engines with water injection and 'WA' being used for engines with
water-alcohol injection; the letters 'I' and 'O' were not used.
- Aircraft: US military aircraft or projects which utilized the engine (other aircraft not listed).
